Social media is buzzing with criticism following the establishment of a new resort reportedly situated amidst Bohol’s iconic Chocolate Hills.
A viral video shared by vlogger Ran the Adventurer aimed to highlight the site’s attractions, but instead ignited a wave of backlash, with users flooding the post with calls to action directed at the Department of Tourism and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
Named Captain’s Peak Garden and Resort, the establishment boasts a sprawling swimming pool and a slide that encroaches upon the pristine landscape of the hills, alongside several guest cottages.
The resort’s operations were temporarily halted, according to manager Julieta Sablas, sister of owner Capt. Edgar Button. Sablas acknowledged the absence of an environmental compliance certificate (ECC) and stated that they commenced closure “upon the order of the mayor.”
Despite having fulfilled 75 percent of ECC requirements, Sablas expressed determination to resolve the situation. She cited approvals from the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) and local officials as justification for the resort’s operation.
However, Bohol Rep. Kristine Alexie Tutor called for the permanent shutdown of the resort, emphasizing the need to preserve the status of the Chocolate Hills as a UNESCO Geopark and a protected area under presidential proclamation.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos demanded accountability from Sagbayan town officials for permitting construction within the Chocolate Hills area, warning of legal action against any negligence or irregularities.
Designated a protected area in 1997, the Chocolate Hills hold significance as a National Geological Monument and a Protected Landscape, recognized for their unique geological formations and importance for future generations.##
