ASIDE from technical assistance on contingency, OCD-10 Regional Director Antonio Sugarol said they also offer training and capacity-building activities for LGU personnel.
These programs aim to improve skills and knowledge in disaster preparedness, response, and management, thereby enhancing the overall capabilities of LGUs to handle various disaster scenarios effectively.
Sugarol discussed, on the August 20 episode of Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas, the efforts made by OCD-10 to enhance disaster preparedness in Northern Mindanao.
These initiatives aim to strengthen the ability of local government units (LGUs) and communities to effectively respond to and recover from both natural and man-made disasters.
Sugarol highlighted the development of contingency plans as a key strategy for disaster preparedness.
These plans provide specific protocols and procedures for different types of disasters, ensuring that local government officials are prepared and well-coordinated in response to emergencies. For instance, contingency planning was conducted in Camiguin for earthquake scenarios due to its volcanic activity.
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) is also enhancing its disaster response by investing in water filtration systems and reliable communication technologies.
Sugarol shared during the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to modernize the organization and improve emergency response capabilities.
And lastly in response to recent disruptions in cellular networks, the OCD is partnering with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to provide satellite phones and VISAT systems during emergencies.
These measures are aimed at ensuring reliable communication and effective coordination among local governments, agencies, and emergency responders during disasters. PIA
