CAMIGUIN – Authorities have arrested two individuals suspected of harassing opposition supporters in a series of coordinated incidents reported across the province.
According to socio-civic organizations and the Philippine National Police (PNP), six cases of political harassment were recorded on May 11, involving armed men in bonnets who allegedly threatened civilians at gunpoint.
At approximately 9:00 PM, PNP operatives apprehended the suspects.
Two of the victims later positively identified the men as those who had threatened them earlier in the day.
Civil society organizations have strongly condemned the escalating acts of voter intimidation and the threats being made against journalists.
They raised concerns about the presence of unidentified individuals who have reportedly been seen in various areas of the island since March.
Local residents have renewed calls for increased visibility from both the PNP and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to protect voters and uphold democratic processes.
They also cited past incidents during the barangay elections last December, where some voters were reportedly prevented from reaching polling centers after being held at gunpoint.
Authorities continue to investigate the incidents.
Camiguinons are urging law enforcement agencies to implement stronger security measures to maintain peace and ensure the safety of all citizens.
