When the Land Dries, the Heart Gives: A Bayanihan for Food Security

In the scorching heat of a Mindanao summer, where temperatures soared between 40 to 43 degrees Celsius, the agricultural heartlands found themselves in the grip of a severe drought.

The region’s farmers, reliant ontimely rains to nourish their crops, faced a grim reality as the parched earth refused to yield.

According to thelatest updates from Mindanao Weather Update on July 28, 2025, the island is experiencing varying degrees ofdrought, ranging from mild to extreme.

While sporadic rain showers provided temporary relief in the evenings, the daytime heat remained relentless, making it nearly impossible for crops and grains to grow.

In response to this crisis, B.I.S.I.G PH (Bayanihan para sa Inklusibong Sigla at Ginhawa Philippines), led by Project Development Office head Ms. Anamie Galpo, partnered with Rise Against Hunger Philippines thru LTCJanette Chavez-Arceo PA (GSC) and the 8th Air Reserve Center (ARCEN) under the Air Force Reserve Command(AFRC) to initiate a vital rice distribution program to help alleviate the burden on drought-strickencommunities.

The rice distribution, conducted on August 6 and 7, reached households in several hard-hit areas, including Barangay Maputi in Naawan, Barangay Tagpangi in Cagayan de Oro City, Barangay Aplaya in Jasaan, and Poblacion Barangays of Cagayan de Oro City.

Each family received 5 kilos of rice, delivered personally byvolunteers/Reservists and personnel who worked hand-in-hand to ensure the aid reached those most in need.

This joint initiative embodies the true spirit of bayanihan.

The seamless collaboration among civil societygroups, military reservists, and humanitarian organizations highlights the importance of unity in addressingclimate-related crises.

While the rice distribution addressed immediate needs, the underlying issue of climate vulnerability remains.

As Mindanao continues to grapple with extreme weather patterns, there is a call for sustained programs thatgo beyond relief—toward climate adaptation, sustainable agriculture, and stronger food security systems.

The rice distribution program is more than just a response—it’s a symbol of hope, compassion, and collectiveaction.

In a time of great need, organizations and individuals rose together to uplift the most affected.

As the region looks ahead, such acts of service and solidarity will remain vital in building a resilient and food-secureMindanao.
