Rep Garin to women: Don’t wear underwear at home to avoid fungal infection

BY JOEL C. ESCOL, Managing Editor

A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL and currently a legislator from Iloilo has advised women not to wear their underwears to avoid fungal infections especially during summer time.

House Deputy Majority Leader and Iloilo Representative Janette Garin suggests women to refrain from wearing underwear, particularly when at home.

“In hot weather, especially when you’re just at home—without any suggestive intent, of course—but if you’re simply lounging around or sleeping, it’s quite beneficial not to wear underwear, while still opting for pajamas or shorts,” mentioned Garin, a physician and former Department of Health (DOH) secretary, as reported by Unang Balita on Tuesday.

“This ventilation method is effective in preventing fungal infections from worsening,” she further explained.

Garin highlighted that women are particularly vulnerable to fungal infections when wearing tight clothing in hot weather.

Fungal infection explained

A fungal infection is a type of infection caused by fungi, microorganisms commonly found in the environment. These infections can affect various parts of the body, including the skin, nails, hair, and internal organs. Fungal infections can manifest in different ways, such as athlete’s foot, ringworm, yeast infections, and more serious systemic infections. Symptoms often include redness, itching, swelling, and in some cases, discharge or changes in the affected area. Treatment typically involves antifungal medications, either topical or oral, depending on the severity and location of the infection. Prevention involves maintaining good hygiene and avoiding environments conducive to fungal growth.

Fungal infection in women

Fungal infections in women commonly affect areas like the vagina, groin, and breasts. Yeast infections, caused by the overgrowth of Candida fungus, are particularly prevalent, leading to symptoms such as itching, burning, and unusual discharge. Other fungal infections like ringworm may also occur, often transmitted through direct contact with infected individuals or contaminated objects. Hormonal changes, antibiotic use, tight clothing, and poor hygiene can contribute to their occurrence. Treatment typically involves antifungal medications, such as creams, suppositories, or oral pills. Maintaining proper hygiene, wearing breathable clothing, and avoiding prolonged moisture can help prevent fungal infections in women.
