Palace Urges OFWs to Rethink “Zero Remittance Week” Amid Concerns Over Wider Impact

The Philippine government has urged Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to reconsider their planned “zero remittance week” protest, warning of its potential negative impact on their families and the national economy. The protest, reportedly organized by the group Maisug Croatia, is set to take place from March 28 to April 4, 2025, as a demonstration against the recent arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

In a press briefing on March 25, 2025, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro called for calm, stating, “We would prefer that every Filipino remains level-headed on this issue. Hopefully, they also understand that the government is simply enforcing our laws.” She emphasized the need for a rational approach rather than actions that could inadvertently harm OFWs’ own loved ones.

The government highlighted that remittances play a crucial role in supporting millions of Filipino families, providing for basic needs, education, and other essential expenses. Officials cautioned that withholding these funds could create financial hardships for dependents and disrupt the economy, as OFW remittances significantly contribute to national revenue.

While the Palace acknowledged the right to protest, it encouraged OFWs to find alternative ways to express their grievances that would not place their families at risk. The administration remains hopeful that OFWs will weigh the consequences carefully and seek constructive dialogue instead of economic disruption.
