However, challenges such as housing backlog, lack of suitable land and delays in permitting hinder progress.
Collaboration between key stakeholders is crucial to provide decent and affordable housing.
The government has achieved 66 percent of its housing assistance targets but a significant backlog remains.
These issues contribute to social inequalities and impede sustainable development.
In focus is the Panmbansang Pabahay Para sa Pilipino Housing (4PH) Program – the government’s flagship housing project that provides affordably-priced homes and lower monthly amortization costs through various subsidies for Filipino workerswho are members of Pag-IBIG.
The government’s target to construct 6.8 million new housing units by 2028 through the 4PHProgram is an ambitious yet necessary goal.
The launch of the program in September 2022, with the aim of building one million housing units annually, represents a strong commitment toaddressing the country’s housing backlog.
To address these challenges, the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (Oro Chamber) is currently holding a Housing and Construction Congress and Expo 2024 in partnership with the Department of Human Settlement and Urban Development Regional Office 10 (DHSUD-X) to advance the goals of affordable housing on November 12 to 14 at Limketkai Atrium in Cagayan de Oro City.
This major event will tackle the current challenges in the housing sector, explore innovative solutions and highlight development opportunities to address the growing housing backlog in the country.
Topics include situationer of the housing sector in Northern Mindanao, affordable housing solutions, sustainable construction practices and innovations, digitization in construction, updates on policy and regulatory frameworks in the housing industry, building alliances for the future of the housing and construction sector and more.
Speakers include famed Architect Felino Palafox Jr., Italpinas Development Corporation chair Romolo Nati and key officials from DHSUD, including Secretary Jose Rizalino Acuzar himself.
There will also be an exhibition featuring sustainable and resilient technologies, best practices and products.
“On the part of the Oro Chamber, we have been advocating for an updated CLUP precisely because we are helping the city attractinvestors,” Talimio said. “We’re happy with the proposed CLUP of Cagayan de Oro whichwould come out by the end of this year. We have been working with that for the last two and ahalf years and we have been pushing hard the city to really produce one.”
