MANILA – Motorcycles are no longer allowed to use the EDSA-Kamuning service road starting May 3, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) acting chair Romando Artes said Thursday.
Motorcycles and other private vehicles, Artes said, will take alternative routes such as Scout Borromeo, Panay Avenue, Mother Ignacia Avenue, and Scout Albano.
“This move is to lessen the traffic on Kamuning service road. All vehicles, including motorcycles, are urged to use the alternate routes,” Artes said.
The MMDA has changed its traffic rerouting scheme around the closed EDSA-Kamuning flyover to address traffic buildup in the area.
More traffic enforcers will be deployed and more directional and traffic signages will be installed to guide motorists through these alternate routes.
The MMDA has asked the Department of Transportation to allow the use of the EDSA Busway daily from 11 p.m. to allow uninterrupted retrofitting works at the flyover.
Artes also called on the Quezon City government for assistance in intensified clearing operations on these alternate routes to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
“Barangay officials will help in clearing alternate routes,” he said.
Artes was joined in the inspection by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)- Regional Director Loreta Malaluan, other DPWH officials, and representatives from the Quezon City government.
Malaluan assured that retrofitting of the structure is done round-the-clock to strengthen the flyover in preparation for potential earthquakes.
On May 1, the southbound lane of the EDSA-Kamuning flyover was partially closed for a six-month rehabilitation and is expected to be fully open to traffic by Oct. 25.
Of the three southbound lanes, two are closed while the remaining lane is used exclusively by the EDSA Busway. (PNA)
