How One Former Nurse Found a Mission in Protecting Filipino Families

By: James Murillo Elaco

Long before he became a leader in the insurance industry, Abner Acopio was a nurse searching for a better future.

Like many Filipino professionals, he once dreamed of going abroad in pursuit of financial stability and greater opportunities. At the time, joining Pru Life UK in 2012 was simply meant to provide extra income.

He never imagined it would eventually become his life’s purpose.

Today, Acopio leads more than 1,000 agents and 25 Unit Managers in Cagayan de Oro while balancing life as a husband, father of two, and endurance athlete. But behind the achievements and leadership titles is a journey built on discipline, faith, and a deep desire to help others prepare for life’s uncertainties.

“At first, the goal was only to earn,” Acopio shared during an interview. “But later on, I realized this work is really about serving people.”

Over the past 13 years, Acopio has seen how financial emergencies can instantly change the lives of ordinary Filipino families. He has witnessed clients battle illness, accidents, and unexpected hardships moments when financial protection became more than just paperwork or policy documents.

For him, those experiences transformed the meaning of insurance.

“Insurance is not just for people who pass away,” he explained. “It is a safety net for people who are still living.”

That realization became even more personal when he started his own family.

As a father, Acopio admitted he often thinks about the future of his children and what would happen if life suddenly took an unexpected turn.

“When I see my children sleeping, I think about what could happen if something happens to me,” he said quietly. “You realize that protecting your family is very important.”

While many people know him today as an accomplished insurance leader, Acopio’s path was never easy. There were moments when he questioned whether to continue in the business. Like many nurses, he was tempted to return to healthcare and pursue opportunities abroad.

But instead of leaving, he chose to stay and continue building a life and career in Cagayan de Oro.

“Through God’s grace, I realized I needed to grow where I was planted,” he said.

Outside work, Acopio spends much of his time training for marathons, triathlons, and ultramarathons. The discipline required in endurance sports, he said, mirrors the lessons he applies in leadership and life.

“When you train for a marathon, you learn patience and consistency,” he explained. “You understand that progress takes time.”

Those same lessons helped him build a team that has grown steadily over the years. But despite earning prestigious industry recognitions and leading a Million Dollar Agency, Acopio said awards were never the most fulfilling part of his career.

Instead, he finds the greatest meaning in watching people’s lives improve.

He recalled seeing agents who once struggled financially eventually travel abroad, purchase their first vehicles, and support their families through opportunities they found in the industry.

More importantly, he said some of the most unforgettable moments happen when clients receive approved insurance claims during times of crisis.

“When families receive help during emergencies, you realize that what you do truly matters,” he said.

Acopio believes the pandemic also changed how many Filipinos view financial preparedness. Before, he said, many people considered insurance an unnecessary expense. But during uncertain times, families began to understand the value of having financial support when emergencies happen.

Today, he continues encouraging breadwinners and young families to think long-term despite economic challenges.

According to him, financial protection is not about fear it is about responsibility, love, and peace of mind.

“Insurance is a gift of love,” Acopio said. “It is something you leave behind for the people who trust and depend on you.” For the former nurse who once simply wanted extra income, the journey eventually became something far greater: a mission to help Filipino families feel secure even in life’s most uncertain moments.
