THE Cagayan de Oro city government is on board with the Filipino-Chinese community in celebrating the Chinese New Year here, highlighting a distinct “Kagay-anon” rendition of the festivities.
During a program at the City Information Office on Wednesday, John Asuncion, head of the local development and investment promotions, said that each year, the local government tries different ways to celebrate the Chinese New Year, which could also attract tourism and investment.
“Every year, we try to make it grander; from the usual fireworks, it has become a pyro-musical event because we always want to bring something new to Cagayan de Oro,” he said.
The week-long celebration will begin on Feb. 16, and a key highlight is the Food Bazaar, showcasing Cagayan de Oro-made delicacies that have evolved with the growth of Filipino-Chinese culture in the city.
Efren Uy, chairman of the Cagayan de Oro Filipino-Chinese Community, said the city has been home to many Filipino-Chinese for more than a century, and they wish to preserve the city’s rich history through the community’s contributions. (PNA)
