Cagayan de Oro, Philippines — Cagayan de Oro 1st District Congressman Lordan Suan is once again finding himself at the center of a growing wave of fake news, with various social media posts portraying him in a negative light. The most recent false narratives suggest that Suan is anti-Duterte, as well as spreading baseless rumors about his character and political stance.
In response, Suan has urged the public not to believe everything they read on social media, especially if the post does not come from his official Facebook page, Atty. Lordan Suan, which boasts over 80,000 followers. He emphasized that any information or statements coming from unofficial sources should be viewed with skepticism and treated with caution.
“Social media can be a powerful tool for communication, but it’s also a breeding ground for misinformation. If it’s not from my verified official page, then it should be taken with a grain of salt,” Suan said in a recent statement.
Bert Amplayo, the Assistant Director of the 1st District and Suan’s spokesperson, echoed this sentiment, stressing that the congressman has been the subject of relentless online attacks. These falsehoods have painted Suan as an unreliable, elitist, egotistical figure, even labeling him as a “traitor” to his constituents. Despite these online portrayals, Amplayo assures the public that these claims are far from the truth.
Amplayo further pointed out that Congressman Suan has been consistently recognized as one of the outstanding lawmakers in the 19th Congress. He has filed over 500 bills, with 24 already becoming laws. His efforts have resulted in significant infrastructure developments for District 1, including farm-to-market roads, access roads, overpasses, multipurpose buildings, tribal halls, hospital buildings, and super health centers. Additionally, his initiatives have brought in road safety measures such as lighted studs, solar-powered roadside lighting, water systems, drainage, and flood control systems, as well as new school buildings.
Suan’s commitment to social services has also been evident through TINGOG, the district’s social services arm, which has helped hundreds of thousands of residents across the city and nearby towns in Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon.
Amplayo reiterated that despite the smear campaign online, Congressman Suan’s dedication to public service remains unwavering. “These lies will not deter the congressman from his mission to serve the people. His record speaks for itself, and he will continue to prioritize the welfare of his constituents,” he said.
However, Amplayo also warned the public about the rise of aggressive, immoral online trolls and emphasized the need for Cagay-anons to resist being swayed by money and patronage politics. He urged the public to be more discerning and critical when consuming online information.
“Trolls today have no moral compass and are willing to spread lies to create division and attack those they disagree with. But the truth will always prevail, and the people of Cagayan de Oro deserve better,” Amplayo added.
As the fight against fake news intensifies, Congressman Suan remains focused on his duty to serve the interests of his district, undeterred by the false narratives being spread about him. LEGIT M POOL
