CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) — Following the neutralization of Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) New People’s Army (NPA) leader in Caraga, Myrna Sularte, also known as “Maria Malaya,” and other communist terrorist group members, the 4th Infantry Division (4ID), Philippine Army (PA), awards the Gold Cross Medal to 18 soldiers at the 4ID Headquarters, Patag, here, February 17.
The medal is the third highest military award in the Philippines for gallantry in action and heroism.
“Kulang man sa kagamitan, umaapaw naman sa tikas at tibay ng loob sa pagharap sa mga kalaban. Tulad ngayon, kung saan pinaparangalan natin ang commendable accomplishments ng ating tropa sa paggawad sa kanila ng mga medalya for gallantry para sa success ng ating kampanya,” said LtGen. Luis Rex D. Bergante, commander of the Eastern Mindanao Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
(Despite the lack of equipment, our confidence and courage is overflowing in facing our enemies. Like now, we honor the commendable accomplishments of our troops by awarding them medals for gallantry for the success of our campaign.)
Bearing the left-facing profile of Manuel L. Quezon, the medal attributes the former President of the Commonwealth during the pre-World War II era as a key figure in Philippine history with significant contributions as a leader.
Bergante said the medals have a deep meaning, as they underscore the importance of developing a credible defense system as a crucial cornerstone of national security.
“Ang mga medalyang ikinabit sa inyong mga uniporme ay may malalim na kahulugan. Sinisimbolo nito ang inyong katapangan sa harap ng banta ng kamatayan,” Bergante stated.
(The medals pinned on your uniforms have deep meaning. It symbolizes your courage in the face of death.)
The commander said soldiers face many challenges in attaining this and that it still has a long way to go in terms of military capabilities, but despite the limited funding, the bravery and strength of the army is outpouring.
Bergante also acknowledged 4th Infantry Division Commander BGen Michele Anayron Jr., saying, “Together with the brigades and battalions, your battle was a success to end the turmoil of the communist terrorists here in the Caraga region.”
For his part, Anayron hopes that with Malaya’s death comes the final straw that leads to the total surrender of the remaining members and the eventual end of the Communist Terrorist Group in the 4ID’s area of responsibility.
“It is unfortunate that Malaya has suffered the same tragic fate as her husband, Ka Oris, and their son, Vincent. We have offered them the path of peace countless times, yet they have never listened or given us a chance. Instead, they continue to victimize innocent civilians and bring terror to our communities,” he said.
4ID emphasizes its call for peace among those remaining in the CTG. It offers reassurance to members who wish to leave, stating that they will be safe and supported.
Further strengthening the peace process in the country, the government continues to implement the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program, which helps former rebels reintegrate into society by providing support and guidance for a peaceful new life. (SAYU/PIA-10)
