FOR the third consecutive year, a student from Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan (XU) has emerged as the Regional Champion in the 29th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) Regional Championships held on November 6, 2025 in Cagayan de Oro City.
Mr. Jude Mari Arubio, a BS Nursing student from Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, claimed the title as Region X’s young statistics champion, besting 14 other provincial winners from Northern Mindanao.
This remarkable three-peat victory underscores Xavier University’s continued dominance in the field of statistics within Region X and highlights its steadfast commitment to academic excellence and the advancement of statistical literacy among its students.
Representing Misamis Oriental, Mr. Arubio demonstrated exceptional knowledge, analytical ability, and composure throughout the competition, ultimately securing the top spot and earning the honor to represent Region X in the upcoming National Finals of the 29th PSQ.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ivan Xavier E. Retardo of Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) won second place, followed by Mr. Karl Hugh Brent Limpo, also from MSU-IIT, who placed third. Both MSU-IIT representatives displayed impressive problem-solving and statistical reasoning skills, making the regional tilt a close and exciting intellectual contest.
All three top winners received PSQ-designed plaques and cash prizes. The cash awards for the regional champions were generously sponsored by the Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental headed by Honorable Governor Juliette T. Uy.
Completing the Top 10 were: Rash Gabriel Tancawan of Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan (4th place), Elisha Jed J. Cabacang of MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology (5th place), Christopher Jay P. Desades of Camiguin Polytechnic State College–Catarman Campus (6th place), Lance Harvey R. Sua of Central Mindanao University (7th place), John Derek P. Antillon of University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines–Cagayan De Oro (8th place), Grant Jhazzel B. Ortega of Central Mindanao Univeristy (9th place), Aikeah Jade G. Credo of Camiguin Polytechnic State College –Main Campus (10th place) and Dionperl Blessel G. Sincero of La Salle Univeristy-Ozamis (10th place).
All fifteen contestants exhibited commendable analytical and quantitative skills, reflecting the region’s growing enthusiasm and talent in statistics.
The PSQ is a nationwide search for young statistics whizzes which began in 1992 designed to test the knowledge and competence in statistics of freshmen college students. This activity is being organized by the Philippine Statistics Authority and the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc., a non-stock, non-profit organization of professional statisticians from government and non-government agencies and the academe.
