CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Misamis Oriental provincial government intensifies its campaign in preventing the spread of rabies.
The action is in full compliance with Republic Act no. 9482 or the Anti-Rabies Act of 2007.
In an interview via phone with Mindanao Daily, Dr. Russel Roa, Animal Rabies Coordinator of the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) shared that tremendous efforts will not only be exerted during the rabies awareness month of March but all year round.
Dr. Roa shared that they will not only administer vaccination to animals found positive but will more importantly spread awareness of how dangerous rabies is to communities especially in schools – citing a data stating that 65% of victims or those being beaten are children. She added that PVO will also be in coordination with their municipal counterparts.
The initiative is targeting a 70% vaccination rate per municipality as well as in the component cities of El Salvador and Gingoog.
Animals brought for vaccination undergo a test for these should not be ill prior to being jabbed.
According to the World Health Organization, “Rabies is a viral zoonotic disease that causes progressive and fatal inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.”
Warm-blooded animals like pigs are prone to rabies.
Although there is no evidence of transmission via consumption, especially when properly cooked, Dr. Roa asked the public to remain vigilant of the meat being consumed.
Pet lovers, especially kids, are discouraged from going near loitering dogs.
Pet owners are also encouraged to be responsible by having their pets vaccinated.
PVO is available from Mondays to Fridays at 8 AM to 5 PM for free anti-rabies shots. ##
