The municipality of Bataraza in Palawan is poised for significant urban transformation as it anticipates an $8 billion investment from Malaysian firm JJC Group Development Asia Sdn Bhd. This development, expected to elevate Bataraza into a highly urbanized and world-class city, was formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed by Bataraza Mayor Abraham Ibba and JJC Group’s President and CEO, Jismit Bin Japong, on June 18 in Puerto Princesa City.
The ambitious plan involves the development of 2,000 hectares of land in Bataraza, with key infrastructure projects including transportation hubs like an airport and seaport, an integrated transportation system, as well as water and power facilities. The initiative also includes the construction of five-star hotels, a resort, a theme park, a convention center, a stadium, a Formula 1 racetrack, and a cable car system, aiming to boost tourism and enhance eco-tourism products.
In addition to tourism infrastructure, the project will see the development of commercial and residential spaces, including shopping malls, a new city core, and various residential areas. A Bataraza Tower is also planned for the Local Government Unit, symbolizing the town’s rapid development.
Jismit Bin Japong emphasized that JJC’s vision is to create a sustainable, resilient, and smart city in Bataraza. The focus will be on smart connectivity, advanced infrastructure, green spaces, environmental protection, and resilient urban planning. The company also aims to foster economic growth and tourism through the creation of economic platforms and technological hubs, ensuring long-term prosperity for the municipality.
The project, which is expected to be completed within five to seven years, is strategically located in Bataraza due to its proximity to Sabah, Malaysia, being only 170 kilometers from Kudat. Japong noted that Bataraza was chosen after technical issues arose with a proposal sent to the city government of Puerto Princesa.
Mayor Ibba expressed his gratitude and full support for the project, highlighting its significance not just for Bataraza but for the entire province of Palawan and the Philippines. He called for the support of Palaweños, acknowledging that the project is still in its early stages, with many permits still required at local, provincial, and national levels. The groundbreaking is expected next month. ##
