Senator Risa Hontiveros pushed for stricter enforcement against the online sale of unregulated and unregistered health products, citing serious risks to public health.
During the Senate Committee on Health and Demography hearing, Hontiveros highlighted the dangers posed by supplements, cosmetics, and other health products sold through e-commerce platforms such as Lazada, Shopee, and TikTok.
Hontiveros said these unregulated products are not just misleading—they are dangerous.
The senator added that these products have caused severe health issues, including reports of younger individuals requiring dialysis due to harmful, unregistered supplements.
Hontiveros stressed the need for tighter enforcement and enhanced regulatory capacity to ensure that online health products comply with safety standards. She also supported a deeper inquiry by the Senate Committee on Health and Demography to identify and address gaps in regulation and enforcement.
The senator supported the privilege speech of Senator Raffy Tulfo criticizing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for failing to effectively monitor and control the sale of unsafe health products.
