CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) –- The City College of Cagayan de Oro has welcomed its students for the class opening this August.

“The reason for establishing the City College is to improve and raise the literacy level among Kagay-anons. Eventually, this will probably talk about 21st-century literacy, which will improve students’ critical thinking skills. Critical thinking skills in a sense that they will be able to solve problems, and they can be creative in problem-solving,” said Dr. Babia.

He also mentioned that one of the challenges facing the Department of Education based on the last PISA result is the problem with creativity skills. He said this is part of literacy they wanted to integrate into the college and technical-vocational education.

There are three courses available at City College of Cagayan de Oro. These are Bachelor of Technical Vocational Teacher Education (BTVTEd) – Major in Electrical Technology, Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education (BTLEd) – Major in Industrial Arts, and Bachelor of Arts in Communication (BA COMM).

Tuition and miscellaneous fees are free for city residents. The City College also takes pride in its fully airconditioned rooms and WiFi-ready campus located at Agusan Annex Campus in Zone 2, Agusan, Cagayan de Oro City.

According to Babia, the City College adheres to the Commission on Higher Education mandates on teaching-learning modality to have face-to-face classes.

The interim president also proudly shared during the Kapihan sa PIA the reason for founding City College of Cagayan de Oro.

“This is because of so many reasons. Number one is that it is a need gyud. Mapalapad pa ang atung education nga libre ug de-kalidad and at the same time, this is also a long-term dream of our dear mayor, Mayor Rolando “Klarex” Uy. On top of this dream, he really wants an education that is inclusive and dynamic. We will also include katung nasa mga hinterlands, sa mga other barangays nga lisod kaayo, para mahatagan gyud ug sakto and quality education.”

Aside from realizing their goal of improving the literacy levels among Kagay-anons, the institution also promotes inclusivity, encouraging young individuals from the hinterlands to gain knowledge and contribute more to society. (IJBD/PIA-10)
