Simple yet compliant – Baikingon’s materials recovery facility

WITH an area of 1219 hectares occupied by 2,879 residents, Baikingon is considered a small barangay in Cagayan de Oro City due to its sparse populace.

Despite that, Baikingon under chairman Jao Gumapac has managed to install what many barangays in the city have failed – a materials recovery facility.

Materials recovery facilities (MRF) in the Philippines are local facilities where collected waste is sorted for recycling, composting, and proper disposal.

Mandated by the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2001 (RA 9003), MRFs are established in each barangay or cluster of barangays to divert waste from landfills.

They process recyclables like paper, plastic, and metal, and convert biodegradable waste into compost.

“Mao kini ang hitsura sa Receptacle o Basurahan sa Brgy Baikingon Cagayan de Oro City,” Gumapac said in his Facebook post. “Kinahanglan limpyo kanunay ang basurahan para maulaw pud ang mag labay nga wala sa saktong oras ug adlaw.”

Cagayan de Oro City recently experienced a garbage crisis because the trash collecting firm was overehelmed with unsegregated wastes.

In his own humble way, Gumapac has instilled discipline to Baikingon residents that despite being a small barangay, their contribution to a cleaner Cagayan de Oro is valuable and worth emulating.
