ON THE SENATE APPROVAL OF THE MARAWI COMPENSATION BILL ON 3RD READING

After waiting for more than four years, we are inching closer to the enactment of the Marawi Compensation Bill as the Senate approved the measure on third and final reading!

We are in deep gratitude to the Senate for its approval of the measure that will provide compensation to the victims of the 2017 Marawi Siege.

We know that the enactment of this measure has been long overdue, but we understand that care and caution should be taken to come up with a law that will truly respond to the needs of the people of Marawi.

Under Senate Bill 2420, monetary claims may be made for residential, cultural, commercial and other properties such as home appliances, jewelries, machineries, and equipment that were affected in the siege. The compensation measure covers 32 barangays, 24 of which are located in the Most Affected Area (MAA).

We hope that this Senate approval of the Marawi Compensation Bill will lead to the enactment of this measure, and we call on the President to leave a lasting legacy in Marawi by signing this bill into law.

We thank Sens. Sonny Angara and Bato dela Rosa, chairs of the Senate committees on Finance and on the Marawi City Rehabilitation, for championing this measure as sponsors.
