Common Concerns and Proposed Solutions

According to Melvin Erederos, chairman of the Mindanao Federation of Transport Cooperatives, the sector faces unique local concerns, as well as common issues that require a united approach. Key concerns include:

  • Rising Fuel Costs: Erederos proposed that cooperatives buy fuel in bulk from the Subic fuel depot to receive discounts.
  • Non-Implementation of Local Public Transport Route Plans (LPTRP): Erederos emphasized that while Cagayan de Oro has implemented LPTRP, other local government units in Mindanao have not.
  • Unregulated Public Transport: Erederos urged the government to strictly regulate colorum and private vehicles operating as public transport.

The Mindanao Federation of Transport Cooperatives invited national and local officials to attend the meeting and listen to the sector’s concerns. While SAGIP partylist Rep. Rodante Marcoleta was unable to attend, he sent a representative. Local officials, including reelectionist Councilor Bernie Esparcia and former Nazareth barangay chairman Maximo Rodriguez III, showed their support.
