FORMER Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno is expected to strengthen the composition of the Local School Board once he wins the May elections and assumes office.
Moreno made the assurance during a consultation with principals of various private elementary and secondary schools in Cagayan de Oro City April 9.
Moreno said he will appoint representatives from tertiary schools, the business sector and clergy as members of the Local School Board.
A Local School Board is a special body created by virtue of Republic Act No. 7160, popularly known as the Local Government Code of 1991 (LGC 91).
Its main duty is to allocate the Special Education Fund to meet the supplementary needs of the localpublic school system.
The Special Education Funf is an additional one percent levy that is collected together withreal property taxes paid to the local government.
For now, the existing members of the Local School Board are local government and education officials, as well as representatives from parent-teacher groups, teachers, and school staff.
But Moreno intended to expand this, saying that representatives from other sectors allow for more participative and inclusive policy making.
