La Union enforces checkpoints for road safety

By Hilda Austria

In Malasiqui, Pangasinan, the La Union Police Provincial Office (LPPO) has heightened its presence and implemented checkpoints to tackle the escalating number of vehicular traffic incidents (VTIs).

In 2023, the province recorded a total of 872 VTIs resulting in 88 fatalities, marking a significant increase from the 511 cases and 77 deaths reported in 2022.

According to LPPO’s deputy provincial director for operations, Lt. Col. Arnold Ongachen, the main causes of VTIs include overspeeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, hitting potholes or swerving to avoid them, resulting in loss of control, misjudgments, distracted driving, and lack of familiarity with traffic regulations.

Land Transportation Office (LTO) – Ilocos Director Glorioso Daniel Martinez said in a statement that efforts have been made to address traffic safety concerns since the second half of 2023.

Last year, the regional LTO office launched the Driver Better to Enjoy Safe Travel (DBEST) campaign to further educate the public on safe driving practices. (PNA)
