MARAMAG, Bukidnon (PIA)–The Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-10 recently conducted training on equipment maintenance and calibration at Farmind Asia Banana Corporation (FABC) in La Roxas, Maramag, Bukidnon.
On February 8 and 9, the company trained 17 plant calibration officers and supervisors on how to calibrate electronic scales, thermometers, and volumetric wares. This group of technical experts is in charge of keeping the company’s machines in the production facility in good shape and making sure they are set up correctly.
Ronald Pangan, Jefferson Lumor, and Engr. Shane Clavano, who work for DOST-10’s regional metrology laboratory, led the training. The speakers discussed precise calibration procedures for specific industrial equipment, and practical evaluation was provided through hands-on exercises. The learning outcomes of the participants were assessed using pre- and post-test assessments.
The training aimed to upskill the employees of FABC in the periodic maintenance and in-house calibration of their equipment in preparation for their upcoming ISO accreditation this year.
FABC is a large-scale banana plantation that exports Cavendish bananas internationally, particularly to Japan. It is one of the primary sources of local employment in the community, with 100 employees or more. In addition to the firm’s economic contributions, it strives to improve the technical know-how of its employees.
“I’m very satisfied with the training. I learned how to calibrate the equipment needed in banana production,” said one of the participants during the evaluation.
The training is expected to increase the productivity and efficiency of the firm.
Through its Regional Standards and Testing Laboratory (RSTL), the DOST-10 is willing to offer training in metrology in different parts of the region. Companies that are interested can send a letter to the OIC, Engr. Romela N. Ratilla, through the RSTL manager, Engr. Frumencio B. Quiblat, Jr. The LOIs may be forwarded to email@example.com.
The RSTL also offers calibration services, chemical and microbiological testing of water, food, and swab samples, and shelf-life studies. Through the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP), the DOST also helps firms upgrade their technology and get consulting services. (DOST-10/PIA-10/Bukidnon)
