CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA) — The Department of Agriculture–Northern Mindanao (DA-NorMin), through the Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP) Scale-Up, is promoting a market-driven and inclusive approach to establish a Double AA Halal Slaughterhouse with Cold Storage in Iligan City.
The project aims to expand market access, strengthen the local livestock industry, and support Halal-compliant agri-enterprise development in the region.
During a coordination meeting with the Iligan City local government unit on Jan. 7, DA officials discussed strategies to ensure sustainable operations and wider market opportunities for livestock stakeholders.
DA Undersecretary for Mindanao Concerns Engr. Zamzamin L. Ampatuan said the facility will strictly follow Halal standards but will cater to a broader market to ensure long-term viability.
The slaughterhouse will operate as a stand-alone economic enterprise under the Iligan City government.
It will follow Good Manufacturing Practices and plans to pursue ISO certification to ensure quality and competitiveness.
The facility will comply with Iligan City Ordinance No. 24-7458, the Comprehensive Halal Ordinance, which requires establishments to provide dedicated Halal lanes and facilities to prevent cross-contamination.
DA Regional Executive Director Jose Apollo Y. Pacamalan reaffirmed the agency’s support for the project.
“We are finalizing the planning and uploading of project components, managing the entire process, and addressing issues to ensure timely implementation under the PRDP framework,” he said.
Set for implementation this year, the project is expected to increase livestock production, processing, and marketing while supporting local producers and promoting inclusive and sustainable agricultural growth. (DA-10/PIA-10/Lanao del Norte)
