‘Basyang’ suspends sea travel in Mindanao areas

DAVAO CIty– The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) temporarily suspended all vessels and watercraft departing from southeastern Mindanao and headed toward the Visayas and Luzon on Thursday due to Tropical Storm Basyang (international name Penha).

The announcement followed the 5 p.m. Wednesday bulletin issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, stating that Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 was hoisted over northeastern Mindanao.

The advisory is in effect until further notice and may change based on the latest weather updates from PAGASA, the advisory said.

It also reminded mariners, vessel operators, and passengers to comply with the provisions of PCG Memorandum Circular 02-23, which outlines the Revised Guidelines on the Movement of Vessels During Heavy Weather.

“The public is encouraged to remain vigilant, stay informed through official announcements, and prioritize safety at all times,” the advisory added.

The PCG District Southeastern Mindanao also issued safety reminders to fishermen, especially during bad weather, urging them to heed weather advisories and updates before sailing.

“Bring enough life jackets, flashlights, batteries, and a whistle when sailing. Do not set sail when there is a storm,” it added. (PNA)
