TAGOLOAN, Misamis Oriental – The expansion of the Mindanao Container Terminal (MCT) has been hailed by local stakeholders as a catalyst for economic growth across Misamis Oriental and Northern Mindanao.
The expansion strengthens port operations, connectivity, and the supply chain, unlocking new opportunities for industries, businesses, and communities throughout the region.
John Venice Ladaga, Provincial Administrator of Misamis Oriental, emphasized the far-reaching impact of the expansion, stating that the ripple effect of this project on the local economy will be profound.
“With enhanced port operations, we can ensure the smooth movement of goods—from agricultural products in our hinterland barangays to processed goods from industrial zones. Even tourism-related ventures will benefit from a more robust supply chain,” he said.
Ladaga said the expansion will create a cycle of economic dynamism, drive innovation, foster small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and promote inclusive growth.
The expansion also received support from the Office of Misamis Oriental 2nd District Representative Yevgeny Vincente B. Emano.
“With the expansion of Mindanao Container Terminal, we anticipate increased capacity and improved services that will elevate our local economy. More importantly, hopefully, it will create jobs and opportunities for our people, empowering them to thrive and contribute to our community’s growth,” stated Van Domingo, representing Representative Emano.
Meanwhile, Arthur Sevilla, district collector of the Port of Cagayan de Oro, stressed the benefits of the expansion for the Bureau of Customs.
“Increased port capacity will facilitate more efficient trade, leading to a higher revenue collection for the Bureau,” he explained.
He said the enhanced security measures implemented in the expansion will significantly bolster their anti-smuggling effort, protect national interests and ensure fair trade practices.
The PHIVIDEC Industrial Authority and Mindanao International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (MICTSI) signed the Amendment and Supplement to the contract for MCT Phase II Expansion on December 19, 2024.
PHIVIDEC-IA Administrator, Atty. Joseph Donato J. Bernedo said this reflects the organization’s commitment to growth and sustainability under the current administration. He further stressed that PHIVIDEC-IA will continue to expand through various projects and initiatives that are set to benefit not only Northern Mindanao but the entire country.
“We are not just shaping economies. We are shaping lives. This port will create jobs, jobs that put food on the table, educate children, and uplift families. It will attract industries, trade and investments, further transforming PHIVIDEC and Region 10 into a hub of opportunities,” he emphasized. (APB/PIA-10)
