GENERAL Santos City is known for its athletic prowess, particularly in boxing, but a young lady named Zaina Lucy Ong Torrecampo is pirouetting her way into the city’s history books . This talented ballerina is the first from General Santos City to compete internationally in ballet, and also the first ballerina to win first place in a local ballet competition, a feat she hopes will illuminate the discipline and dedication inherent in the art form.

Zaina’s journey began at a local dance school, where her natural grace and passion for movement quickly became apparent. Years of rigorous training, dedication, and countless hours perfecting her technique have culminated in her recent international debut. Representing not only herself but also her beloved hometown, Zaina has captured the attention of the global ballet community.

Beyond her personal achievements, Zaina is a fervent advocate for recognizing ballet competitions with the same level of importance and respect as traditional sports. She believes that the athleticism, mental fortitude, and intense training required of ballet dancers deserve equal recognition. “Ballet is not just about artistry; it demands incredible strength, flexibility, and stamina,” Zaina explains. “The discipline and competitive spirit are just as present as in any sport.”

Zaina hopes her journey will inspire other young talents in General Santos City to pursue their passion for ballet and to see it as a viable and respected competitive field. She envisions a future where ballet is celebrated alongside other sports, fostering a more inclusive and diverse appreciation for athletic achievement in her community and beyond. As she continues to grace international stages, Zaina carries the dreams of her city, championing the art of ballet one elegant step at a time.
