RESULTS of the 2024 functional literacy and mass media survey revealed that Northern Mindanao posted the highest basic literacy rate among all Mindanao regions, reaching 90.8
percent.
This means that nine out of ten Filipinos aged five years and over are able to read, write and
compute.
This translates to approximately 4.3 million
individuals out of an estimated 4.7 million individuals aged five years old and over.
Among provinces and highly urbanized cities in the region, the city of Cagayan de Oro recorded the highest basic literacy rate at 96.1 percent, surpassing the regional average by 5.3 percentage points.
In Northern Mindanao, the functonal literacy rate in 2024 was recorded at 70.0 percent.
This indicates that seven in every ten individuals aged 10 to 16 years in the region can read, write, compute and comprehend.
Among provinces and righty urbanized cities, the city of Cagayan de Oro posted the highest functional literacy rate at 84.4 percent exceeding the regional average by 144 percentage points.
