Normin firm eyes solar acean pumped project

GREENERGY Development Corporation, a Northern Mindanao-based energy firm, is exploring a solar ocean pumped storage (SOPS) project, aligning with the renewable energy agenda of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA).

Greenergy president Cerael Donggay said SOPS could attract billions of pesos in green investments, create jobs, and drive economic growth.

“Our natural coastal valleys and abundant solar energy make us a prime candidate to pioneer this technology,” Donggay said in an interview Friday.

He said countries like Japan and Norway are exploring ocean-based pumped storage, but the Philippines’ optimal conditions position it to become a global leader.

PSOPS could provide sustainable energy security, reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports, and address the issue of high electricity costs.

The initiative aligns with MinDA’s renewable energy agenda for 2030, which includes distributed energy resources, expanded solar programs, and net metering.

Last year, MinDA Deputy Executive Director Romeo Montenegro highlighted Mindanao’s unique challenges and opportunities in transitioning to renewable energy. (PNA)
