$96M project secures Albay’s broom-making village

By Connie Calipay

Manito, Albay locals are reaping the rewards of the newly finished 500-meter slope protection initiative, valued at PHP96.4 million, courtesy of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 2nd District Engineering Office (DEO).

In a media release on Wednesday, DPWH Albay 2nd District Engineer Warren Azotea said the project in Barangay Buyo has started to improve the lives of the residents most of whom are producers of lasa grass—the material used to make soft brooms.

“With the road dike in Barangay Buyo, soft broom producers residing in the area benefited, with the convenience of transporting their handcrafted products and providing residents with security, ease of transport, and mobility to nearby barangays and towns,” he said.

He said the project also protects the residents from floods and safeguards agricultural lands and properties.

It also provides easier access to the enchanted falls in Sitio Calpi and offers a breathtaking view of the mountainous part of the place. (PNA)
