Pagatpat flood control project lobbied by Suan inaugurated

THE flood control project along lponan River located in Zone 1, Camarahan, barangay Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro Clity, is one of the most significant intrastructure initiativesaimed at strengthening the city’s resilience against flooding.

This project reflects the Department of Publle Works and Highways’ (DPWH) commitment to developing safe, sustainable and climate-resilient public infrastructure.

It was made possible through the budgetary support and steadtast advocacy of Congressman Atty. Lordan Suan who continues to push for programs that protect lives, properties and communities from natural disasters.

Situated along the downstream section of barangay Pagatpat, the project spansapproximately 330 meters and includes four berms and a 4.0-meter-wide Portland cement concrete pavement (PCCP) walkway, providing both maintenance access and safe publeuse.

The structure also features a 0.91-meter reinforced concrete pipe culvert (RCPC) cross drain, metal stair raitings and wheel guards for enhanced satety and functionality.

Built with reinforced structural concrete on the riverside and stonemasonry on the groundside, the flood control wall is designed for long-term durability and stability against strongwater flow and erosion.

While the project delivers substantial protection to nearby residents, the entire communityis not yet fully covered due to right-of-way challenges in certain sections of the riverbank.

Congressman Suan had intended to allocate additional funds next year to extend the struc-ture and provide full coverage to affected areas. However, this plan was hindered after the Office of the President ordered major budget cuts on flood control projects nationwide for the upcoming fiscal year.

With a total cost of P680 millon, the current phase was completed on January 30, 2025 and now serves as a crucial defense for families living near the Iponan River, reducing flood risks, improving community safety and supporting local economic activity.
