DOST Davao Introduces Halal to Women Groups in Sarangani Island

As the Global Halal Industry continues to grow, the Department of Science and Technology XI conducted a Halal Awareness Seminar for 120 women in Batu Island, Sarangani, Davao Occidental, to engage them in the market opportunities with Halal products.

DOST XI Halal Laboratory Technical Manager Ms. Alma Lamparas led the seminar and highlighted that Halal is not just limited to removing pork presence in food and non-food products but it also concerns the slaughtering preparation, and consumption processes.

She also stressed that while Halal is derived from Islamic teachings, the classification of food, and Halal beverages extends beyond the Muslim community and encompasses people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The Muslim women of the community also shared their practices in preparing Halal food, while the non-Muslim women engaged actively in learning the Halal processes.

Ms. Maria De Arce, head of the women’s organization, thanked DOST XI for the opportunity provided to them and encouraged her members to also share the learning with their neighbors who were not given the opportunity to join the seminar.

“Sa DOST, dako ang amoang pasalamat para sa pag impart ninyo sa amoa ug knowledge na makatabang sa livelihood sa mga kababaihan diri (We are grateful to DOST for imparting your knowledge with us that will truly help with the livelihood of the women here), she added.

DOST Davao also delved into Halal Concepts and Principles, the Halal Assurance System, and the Halal Management System which is part of the Agency’s efforts to intensify the adoption and development of the Halal industry in the country.
