Micro-enterprises are vital engines for economic growth and poverty reduction in many developing regions, including Northern Mindanao, Philippines. This study identifies critical factors influencing the competitiveness of these micro-enterprises by analyzing data gathered from Focus Group Discussions and empirical research across the region.
The findings reveal that product quality, market relations, entrepreneurial competence, human resources, and infrastructure significantly enhance micro-enterprise competitiveness. Product quality boosts customer satisfaction and loyalty, allowing businesses to differentiate themselves in competitive markets. Strong market relations—through networks with suppliers and customers—provide access to information and new business opportunities. Entrepreneurial competence, characterized by innovation, risk-taking, and management skills, equips owners to respond effectively to market changes.
Human resource skills also play a key role in improving productivity and service quality. Furthermore, infrastructure such as reliable transportation and utilities facilitates efficient operations and better market access. Conversely, financial access, technology adoption, and political-regulatory factors were found not to have a direct, statistically significant influence within the specific context of Northern Mindanao, though they may indirectly impact competitiveness.
This study underscores the importance of region-specific analyses for MSME support interventions and offers actionable recommendations. Policies focusing on enhancing product standards, strengthening market networks, building entrepreneurial capacities, upgrading infrastructure, and fostering skilled human resources can bolster the sustainability of Northern Mindanao’s micro-enterprises.
