Vice President Sara Duterte has moved to calm concerns about her absence from the country, assuring the public on Thursday, March 20, that she remains committed to fulfilling her duties as the Philippines’ second-highest official.
Despite being abroad, Duterte emphasized that her overseas trip would not hinder her ability to carry out her responsibilities. This assurance comes as the Vice President faces a recent development – the recall of 75 Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel from her security detail.
The Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group (VPSPG), composed of military personnel, will continue to provide security for Duterte. This separate unit was formed in 2022 and operates independently of the Presidential Security Group.
Duterte’s statement aims to reassure the public that her duties are being fulfilled, regardless of her physical location. The Vice President seeks to maintain stability and confidence in the government amidst her overseas trip by affirming her commitment to her role.
