THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) 2nd Division has disqualified Paul Rodriguez from running as congressman in the lone district of Camiguin.
The resolution was contained in an 18-page document signed March 19 by presiding Commissioner Rey Bulay, and Commissioners Nelson Celis and Noli Pipo.
Based on the evidence presented by Petitioner, Respondent has not met the residency requirement for his candidacy in Camiguin. “Therefore, he falsely claimed in his COC that he is a resident of the Province of Camiguin for 11 years and 4 months. Considering that this false representation pertains to a qualification for the position to which he seeks to be elected, he has committed material misrepresentation in his COC,” read part of the resolution.
“Respondent signed his COC, and subscribed and sworn to the veracity of his declarations therein, indicating that his false representation is deliberate, and will effectively mislead the electorate on his qualification as Member, House of Representatives, Lone Legislative District of the Province of Camiguin.
WHEREFORE, premises considered, the Petition is GRANTED. The Certificate of Candidacy [“COC” ] of Respondent PAUL Y. RODRIGUEZ for Member, House of Representatives, Lone Legislative District of the Province of Camiguin for the 12 May 2025 National and Local Elections [“2025 NLE”] is hereby DENIED DUE COURSE TO AND/OR CANCELLED,” Comelec stated.
