Wave 7 JobStart life skills training to benefit 100 Oro youth

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)–One hundred youth completed the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE)-10 wave 7 JobStart Philippines Program’s (JSP) Life Skills Training (LST) through the program implementer, the Local Government of Cagayan de Oro, July 1, at N Hotel, here.

JSP LST enhances employability by reducing job-search period while increasing employability through training. This includes technical training and internship as a mechanism of employment facilitation designed to increase the capacity of Public Employment Service Offices (PESOs) in providing full cycle employment facilitation.

DOLE NorMin Assistant Regional Director Estrella Pahalla, who represented Regional Director Albert Gutib, said the graduates were now job-ready in their quest to match their skills as she inspired them with the word ACE.

“‘A’ for achievement. Do not stop from achieving, always aim to endeavor to learn something. Finish the race, do not just start the race. ‘C’ for commitment to achieve and improve yourselves in order to reach your dreams. ‘E’ for educate. Do not forget to learn, always eager to learn new things,” Pahalla said.

Meanwhile, CDO City Labor Committee Chairperson Councilor Girlie Balaba expressed gratitude to DOLE and partner stakeholders for improving the lives of the graduates with a firm belief that a productive individual makes a productive community.

LST, a major JSP stage is given to youth beneficiaries to provide them with learnings about knowing one’s self, world of work, personal branding, job hunting, financial literacy, health and well-being, and networking.

Also, CDO PESO Manager Kathleen Kate Sorilla congratulated the completers emphasizing the use of the 37 training modules for their future job endeavors.

“I am thrilled that finally you have finished the first step. Always remember that excellence is not a skill but an attitude,” Sorilla said.

Upon LST completion, trainees will undergo a 44-day technical training (TT) under various partner employers. A trainee, however, can skip or be exempted from undergoing the TT and transition directly to a 44-day internship stage receiving 75% of the prevailing minimum wage in the locality to be paid by the partner stakeholder.

The 100 completers form part of the 135 applicants who submitted their applications to the PESO who took interest in the program via PESO social media postings.

On the same day, eight employers participated in a mini job fair for the graduates facilitated by DOLE CDO field office and PESO CDO to aid them in showcasing their acquired skills and knowledge during the 10-day LST. As of writing, there were six who were directly hired by third-party employers. (DOLE-10/PIA-10)
