Pediatric vaccination in Camiguin set on February 16

CAMIGUIN (PIA)–Children in Camiguin aged 5 to 11 years old can already receive their COVID-19 vaccine as the pediatric vaccination in the province is set to begin, February 16.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Gretchen Cabalang confirmed that beginning next week, Camiguin General Hospital will start administering COVID-19 vaccines to children aged 5 to 11 during the ‘OK Doc!’ radio program, February 9.

Priority recipients for the first wave of the vaccination program are children and dependents of healthcare workers and hospital staff, and those with medical conditions such as metabolic disorders, congenital heart disease, tuberculosis, kidney problems, and other comorbidities.

However, children with asthma or are diagnosed with cancer are advised to consult their pediatrician or attending physician first before receiving their jab, Dr. Carmela Macarayan of the Camiguin General Hospital said.

For his part, Camiguin Vaccine Czar Conrado F. Odchigue said parents or accompanying guardians must present a copy of the child’s birth certificate indicating their age, medical certificate from their pediatrician, child’s school ID, and the accompanying adult’s valid ID.

To address vaccination anxieties, Macarayan assured the public of the safety and efficacy of these vaccines, referencing multiple studies and tests done on children of the same age. Furthermore, she cites that vaccinating children can effectively prevent severe and long-term effects of COVID-19, and reduce community transmission.

“[There were] no reported severe adverse events such as anaphylactic shock, nor death related sa (to) vaccination. That is how safe and efficacious kani nga vaccine karon nga gi-approve sa (this vaccine is, which is now approved for) 5 to 11 years old,” Macarayan said.

Guidelines set by the Department of Health (DOH) state that children should only receive one-third of the dose administered for adults. That said, additional measures will also be taken to ensure that vaccines intended for children do not get mixed up with those intended for adults, Odchigue says.

The nationwide campaign to vaccinate children aged 5 to 11 has been implemented by the DOH since February 7. (GDA/PIA-10/Camiguin)
