Wielding an exemplary fusion of wizardry and scientific prowess, EIGHT (8) STUDENTS from the Mindanao State University-General Santos (MSU-GENSAN) conquered the Philippine Microbiology Olympiad (PhilMO) 2023 ,prevailing as the overall champion against the other 10 competing universities ,held at the Philippine National Halal Laboratory and Science Center ,Koronadal City , on Wednesday November 22, 2023.
According to Pia Gleare Gonzaga, Microbiology 4th year students, Adrianne Abiso, Ela Mae Jetigan, and Nice Samonte, basked in passion and, with the guidance of Dr. Lynn Esther Rallos, brought the esteemed victory home after leaping 5 steps forward since their top 6 finish in the olympiad’s recently concluded Virtual Elimination Round.
Their fellow MSUans, Jay Ann Rabe, Eunace Olaver, and Xyrelle Deanne Formento, also triumphed in the team category with a 6th place finish, along with John Christian Pio seizing 4th place and Mariano Aniano Yajj Bantilan ranking 6th in the individual category, Gonzaga said.

The team competed against 10 distinguished institutions nationwide, namely, the University of the Philippines—Mindanao, Mindanao State University—Iligan Institute of Technology, Central Mindanao State University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Cotabato State University, Notre Dame of Marbel University, Mapua University,
Southwestern University Phinma, Mindanao State University—Marawi, and the University of Southern Mindanao.
Wizards in the field of microbiology remarkably once again showed the intellectual competence of MSU-Gensan, raising the institution’s reputation, particularly the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics’, after its back-to-back notable titles in recent national competitions, Gonzaga said.
