Mambajao boosts health programs via health data collection, analysis

CAMIGUIN (PIA)–Prioritizing the health of its citizens, the Local Government of Mambajao passed the Local Epidemiologic Surveillance Unit ordinance that will serve as a tool for the systematic collection and analysis of health data.

“Keeping every Mambajaonon healthy is any administration’s top priority. But it has never been more always urgent, more always challenged and more always needed than in our time,” Mambajao Mayor Yñigo Jesus Romualdo said in his State of the Municipality Address,  July 6.

With the said tool, Romualdo said the LGU would be able to formulate strategic actions with the science-backed data.

Being the center of commerce, education, governance, and leisure, the town naturally attracts more mobility, thus, putting the residents at greater risks for the easy spread of any virus.

Currently, with the immediate response of the LGU, especially with its intensive campaign on COVID-19 vaccination, the town has recorded zero COVID-19 cases since March 2022. It has also reached 92.3% in full vaccination status and 86.49% on fully immunized senior citizens.

“Mambajao is also recognized by the Department of Health in our national vaccination drive compliance. Our RHU is also a recipient of the RxBox Telehealth Device,” Romualdo added.

Care for women, children

For the past year, LGU Mambajao managed to zero out maternal mortality as well as it reduced child mortality through the implementation of the Garantisadong Pambata and Newborn Screening.

They have also brought down the town’s malnutrition rate with their consistent feeding program and strong advocacy on giving proper nutrition to children.

“With our RHU’s [Rural Health Unit’s] consistent efforts, we are at 91% accomplishment versus our immunization targets against polio, human papilloma virus, pneumonia and flu,” Romualdo said, citing the LGU’s full swing of its immunization program.

On ensuring good health of children, Mambajao LGU assisted almost 400 boys in its annual circumcision activity, and the bi-annual community-based deworming program.

They have also lowered the incidence of dengue cases by 20% and have kept zero mortality from any mosquito-related diseases.

As for the increasing mental health issues in the town, Romualdo said they already proposed the creation of a Mental Health Hotline, Mental Health Desks in the Municipal Health Offices and Barangay Health Centers, and the training of staff in handling mental health issues.

“Kining mga programa sa (These programs on) health and wellness ang usa sa akong prayoridad nga dapat gyud mahatagan ug (are among my priorities that should be given) attention. In my new term as mayor, I will ensure that I will lead by example in living a fit and healthy lifestyle,” Romualdo said. (RTP/PIA-10/Camiguin)
