DTI-12 partners with tuna players in the conduct of trade exhibit at National Tuna Congress

KORONADAL CITY, SOUTH COTABATO – The Department of Trade and Industry 12 (DTI-12) will spearhead, together with the SOCSKSARGEN Federation of Fishing and Allied Industries, Inc. (SFFAII), the conduct of the trade exhibit component of the 22nd National Tuna Congress (NTC) slated on September 1 to 2, 2022 at SM City Gensan, Koronadal City.

A total of 64 exhibitors across the tuna industry value chain are expected to occupy the 120 booths prepared for this annual gathering of tuna industry players.

Included in the display are products of the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) of the region enrolled under the One Town, One Product (OTOP) Program of DTI. The food and non-food pasalubong products will be offered for sale to the NTC participants and mallgoers during the two-day event.

DTI Secretary Alfredo Pascual is expected to open the trade exhibit and will address the MSMEs and congress participants on the first day of the event.

With the theme “Braving Rough Seas toward a Better Tomorrow,” the congress will be a gathering of different industry players, government, non-government agencies, experts, and leaders to discuss tuna industry strategies and best practices, market updates, pandemic coping mechanisms, solutions, and proven results.

In a press conference conducted on 29 August 2022 at General Santos City, Dominic Salazar, the chairperson of the NTC said that SOCCSKSARGEN remains as the Tuna Capital of the Philippines with an annual bulk fish landing of 350 thousand metric tons last year and the presence of major tuna canneries in the region.

The tuna industry is one of the 16 industry clusters being supported by DTI in Region 12 under the Industry Cluster Enhancement (ICE) Program. Aside from the direct support to the major industry players, DTI-12 has been supporting too micro enterprises like the provision of Shared Service Facility to RSA Fishermen/Dependent Cooperative, a group of wives of fishermen in General Santos City, which allowed them to venture into the manufacturing of rags for the tuna industry and the eventual diversification of products into pouches, bags, and curtains.

Flora Politud-Gabunales, OIC-Regional Director of DTI-12, said that aside from the assistance extended to MSMEs, one of the more recent concerns that are of great interest to the tuna industry is the development of a blueprint to achieve a sustainable supply chain and efficient logistics services sector.

“We are pleased to inform you that DTI will be conducting a “Supra Regional Consultations to Improve Logistics Efficiency, Reduce Logistics Costs, and Improve Agri Supply Chain” in Davao City same schedule as the NTC. Rest assured that we will be raising the concerns of the tuna players in the said consultation,” said Politud-Gabunales.

Major topics to be discussed in the NTC include the Status of the Tuna Fishery and Allied Sectors Amidst the Pandemic, and Philippine Tuna Export Opportunities and Constraints.
