DPWH turns over Evacuation Center to Iligan LGU

Iligan City, June 7 – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) recently turned-over the newly completed evacuation center to the City Government of Iligan to improve the calamity-resiliency of the city. The facility was received by Patrick Nuñez of the Iligan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (ICDRRMO).

The P32.9-million project can accommodate more than 100 families affected by natural and man-made calamities. The center has a clinic, reception area, male and female comfort rooms, mess hall, prayer room, kitchen and conjugal room among others.

The turnover ceremony was led by Congressman Frederick Siao, District Engineer Alykhan Ali and Disaster Response Head Patrick Nuñez.

This special facility is a strong testament on what we can achieve if we work hard together towards a common goal and a shared dream” declared District Engineer Ali.

Evacuation centers serve as a refuge for disaster victims, acting as a temporary home for the affected residents. With the devastating effects of global warming, preemptive evacuations are oftentime necessary to minimize the number of fatalities during disasters such as flooding, storm surge, and landslides.

The evacuation facility was built in compliance with the industry set standards while adhering to the best practice guidelines for design of evacuation centers. VNL/DPWH-PIO
