DOH-10 launches KonsulTayo to counter ‘fake news’ on health issues

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)–The Department of Health (DOH)-10 launched ‘KonsulTayo,’ a bi-monthly forum to discuss health concerns and provide right and correct information from the right sources to counter fake news and boost information dissemination.

DOH-10 Assistant Regional Director Ellenietta HMV N. Gamolo said, “At this time na (where) very common ang mga fake news, we would need the right and correct information from the right sources as well. With Konsultayo, we hope to address the lack of information and provide it to the people.”

Meanwhile, Infectious Disease Cluster Head Dr. Wellaflor Kindom-Brito emphasized the importance of health promotion and education to improve northern Mindanao’s health seeking behavior.

The KonsulTayo has seven priority areas, which include diet and exercise, environmental health, vaccine and immunization to promote vaccine use, substance use, “we want to prevent people in using tobacco, cigarettes and illicit drugs, mental health, sexual and reproductive health, and the violence and injury prevention,” Brito added.

DOH-10 has clarified that they received a directive from the President that within his first 100 days, the department should be able to convince the local government units (LGUs) and all the partners that all senior citizens, 90% of them should have already been fully vaccinated, meaning two doses for all senior citizens, nationwide and 50% of the population have already received their first booster dose.

“If we are able to accomplish that 90% of senior citizens fully vaccinated and 50% already with their booster, there might be some guidelines on having to remove the mask or ensuring that we have full face to face classes and some alert levels, the one we are using now, might be revised,” Gamolo said.

Gamolo also clarified that anyone can still get sick with COVID-19 despite getting the vaccine, but what the department is protecting is the severe conditions.

“We are urging our people to get that booster, especially if your last dose or second dose was four months ago. Our campaign for the 100 days is the first booster, we will increase it until 50% of our population. And if you are also qualified for the second dose, four months after your first booster dose, then you should also get that second booster dose,” she said.

Dr. David Mendoza, head local health support division of DOH-10, said BIDA Solusyon is still in effect but there is a new meaning to BIDA: B-best fitted mask, I-isolate yourself when you are sick, D-double up your protection, by having your first two doses of COVID-19 plus booster dose to double protection, and A-adequate Airflow.

As of recent COVID-19 cases in the region, Mendoza said out of the 400 active cases, 80% are unvaccinated meanwhile, 10% who are vaccinated only manifest mild symptoms and some are asymptomatic. (JMOR/PIA-10)
