Design and IT school in Makati institutionalizes community engagement with various organizations

Institutionalizing the mission to produce students that will be catalysts for positive social change, design and IT school iACADEMY expands opportunities to roll out community development activities and initiatives partnering with several organizations through the Social Orientation and Community Involvement (SOCI) unit under iACADEMY’s External Linkages and Partnerships Department (ELPD).

Through SOCI, the social development arm of iACADEMY, the school expresses its intent to be an active partner of the community in implementing advocacy work, community-engaged learning, and partnership synergy that will motivate community transformation and development.

“We believe that the partnership with various institutions is an important component of teaching that would support our faculty members in nurturing Game Changers to be innovative, become bearers of positive impact in the society, and to be quality leaders with a strong commitment for community transformation”,  shares Raquel Perez-Wong, Chief Operating Officer of iACADEMY.

The joint partnership is participated by the Educational Research and Development Assistance  (ERDA) Foundation Inc., San Juan National High School, Barangay 740 of Manila City with 4,000 residents, and Barangay San Antonio of Makati City with 17,494 residents.

Dolora Cardeño, Executive Director of ERDA Foundation, Inc., shared her delight in this partnership with iACADEMY stating she admires the school’s openness and active participation in these kinds of initiatives.

“Dito, tulong tulong tayo. Hindi nag-iisa ang estudyante, at hindi nag-iisa ang komunidad. We will be working together to attain our objectives”, she adds.

Cesar Camayra, principal of San Juan National High School also expressed the school’s enthusiasm toward this partnership, saying that they are looking forward to how both institutions will change the game through community service and education.

Meanwhile, local government units Barangay San Antonio of Makati City and Barangay 740 of Manila City represented by Barangay Treasurer Rita Ramos and Barangay Secretary Gerry Guanco respectively, expressed their gratitude for having participated in this undertaking, saying it will be a true game-changer for their communities to be part of iACADEMY’s program that will serve as venues for outreach activities, service learning, and more.

To date, SOCI has planned out several community engagement activities based on the needs assessment, on-site meetings, and virtual consultations with the partners:

  • Digital Literacy for the youth of ERDA Foundation Inc. in their Paco and Pandacan communities (accomplished and attended by 60 youth)
  • Stress Debriefing for Brgy Officials of Brgy 740, Manila and Brgy. San Antonio, Makati
  • Career Navigation for Grade10 students of San Juan National High School
  • Financial Literacy for the faculty of San Juan National High School
  • Caring for Carers: A Psychosocial First Aid for barangay frontliners
